Rock Island Auction Company’s premier auctions always contain firearms that belonged to prominent figures such as renowned political and military leaders, artists, celebrities, etc. The recently-ended August 2023 Rock Island Premier Firearms Auction was no exception and there was a Smith & Wesson Model 53 revolver consigned to this auction that once belonged to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll Elvis Presley. The estimated price range that this revolver was expected to be sold at was $60,000 – $90,000, however, the King’s wheelgun was sold for over twice the estimated high price – $199,750.
Rock Island Auction Company @ TFB:
“The collectibles market has been experiencing unprecedented growth in several genres,” said RIAC President Kevin Hogan. “When you combine two of those genres, Elvis’ memorabilia and collector firearms, the result is tremendous excitement and high totals at auction.”
Manufactured in 1974, this Smith & Wesson Model 53 revolver (S/N 4K82595) is chambered in .22 Remington Jet and has an 8 3/8″ barrel. In 1976 it was returned to the Smith & Wesson factory to be gold inlaid and engraved with United States bicentennial motifs to become a gift for Elvis Presley. The engravings were executed by master engraver Russell Smith. Hiram’s, a gun shop in California, commissioned the work and gifted the gun to Presley in November of 1976. This revolver is exceptionally well preserved with over 99% of its original factory blued finish retained. It was consigned with its case, a matching .22 LR cylinder as well as letters and photographs documenting its provenance.
